This map shows how cheap, non-specialist GPS systems use ‘radius alert’ to detect speed cameras. In this example, you would get a false alert on all of those roads in the blue circle, no matter which direction you are traveling in.
But, with the BTST Locator’s directional alert, you are only warned as you approach the actual camera or mobile trap, on the exact road it’s on, and in the direction it’s facing (see the red line).
The more expensive end of the market had some decent products but none that I found to be 100% accurate (as I have always said of GPS detectors).
Probably the best of the bunch was the Road Angel (which is by far the market leader in the UK). However, the Road Angel had a few major flaws:
1) The screen was too small to see all the data on it.
2) As it sits on it’s little magnet, the weight of the power cable pulls on the device and twists it around. This means that you can’t adjust the angle of the screen which I found REALLY annoying. It was especially bad when the sun was low in the sky and you couldn’t adjust the angle of the screen so that the sun does not reflect off it in to your eyes.
3) The database was not 100% accurate.
